Dr. Luis Fernando Madrid

Biography
Dr. Luis Fernando Madrid is an Australian-Colombian opera and orchestral conductor, artistic leader, pianist and educator whose career spans more than three decades across Australia and Latin America. Based in Sydney and working regularly in Colombia, he is recognised for an interpretative approach that combines scholarly insight, expressive flexibility and a strong understanding of the relationship between the stage, singers and orchestra.
Madrid has particular expertise in Italian opera, including bel canto, opera buffa and the verismo repertoire. His artistry is informed by doctoral research undertaken at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, University of Sydney, examining the evolution of tempo, expression and interpretative practice in Italian opera. This research underpins an approach distinguished by stylistic awareness, clarity of musical architecture and the expressive use of tempo and rubato.
His international work includes collaborations with Ópera de Colombia, the Orquesta Filarmónica de Bogotá, the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Colombia and the Orquesta Filarmónica de Cali. In Australia, he has conducted ensembles including the Woollahra Philharmonic Orchestra, Macquarie Towns Orchestra, UNSW Medical Orchestra and Sydney Conservatorium of Music Symphony Orchestra.
Madrid is Founder, Artistic and Music Director of the Sydney Virtuosi Orchestra, established to present ambitious orchestral programs and create professional development opportunities for emerging musicians. He is also Founder, Artistic and Music Director of Camerata Lirica d’Australia; CEO of Fundación Sinfónica Alpha; and Founder and Artistic Director of the Australia–Colombia Opera Partnership, through which he develops sustained artistic relationships, opera productions and professional pathways between the two countries.
His forthcoming engagements include conducting Ópera de Colombia’s 50th Anniversary Gala in October 2026 with the Orquesta Filarmónica de Bogotá and Coro de la Ópera de Bogotá, an engagement with the Orquesta Filarmónica de Cali in November 2026, and concerts with the Woollahra Philharmonic Orchestra in Sydney in December 2026. In August 2027, he will serve as Music Director and Conductor for Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci in Bogotá, followed by Cimarosa’s Il matrimonio segreto with Ópera de Colombia in October 2027. His previous work with Ópera de Colombia includes Donizetti’s Rita.
Beyond the podium, Madrid has made a sustained contribution to the development of singers and instrumentalists. In 2014, he founded the Sydney Opera Scuola, providing emerging artists with opportunities to study and perform operatic repertoire. His educational work has also included mentoring young musicians in Australia and presenting masterclasses in Colombia.
Madrid holds a Doctor of Musical Arts and a Master of Music in Conducting from the University of Sydney. His principal conducting mentors have included Imre Palló, Baldur Brönnimann and Simon Carrington. His contributions have been recognised with Colombia’s Epifanio Garay Medal and, in 2025, by the Alcaldía Mayor de Cartagena de Indias for his distinguished conducting career.
His repertoire extends from the core symphonic canon to operatic works by Mozart, Donizetti, Cimarosa, Puccini, Mascagni and Leoncavallo. He is also a committed advocate for Australian, Colombian and Latin American composers, bringing their music into programs designed to connect audiences, cultures and artistic traditions.
